Holden HSV (Holden Special Vehicles) was Australia’s factory-backed performance division for Holden, born in 1987 and based in Clayton, Victoria (Melbourne), created to build OEM-quality “hot” versions of mainstream Holden platforms with a sharper edge in power, handling, braking and design. HSV opened to the public in February 1988 after unveiling the first “Walkinshaw” at the 1987 Sydney Motor Show, and its story is tightly tied to Holden’s local manufacturing era—taking Commodore-based sedans, wagons and utes and turning them into genuine Australian muscle cars.
HSV is best known for performance sedans and performance utes rather than luxury limousines or off-road-first vehicles. The core formula was simple and effective for SEO and buyer intent: V8 performance, aggressive chassis tuning, louder exhaust character, bigger brakes, and track-capable upgrades while keeping daily drivability. Icon models include the Clubsport, Senator, Maloo, and the later flagship GTS and GTSR, culminating in the collectible 2017 HSV GTSR W1—famous for its hand-built 6.2L supercharged LS9 V8 outputting 474kW and 815Nm.
In terms of markets, HSV was overwhelmingly strongest in Australia and New Zealand, with a smaller enthusiast footprint elsewhere through limited export and platform-sharing pathways.
