The correct parts cannot be chosen from the Subaru badge or model name alone. The brand spans compact BRZ coupes, Impreza hatchbacks, WRX performance cars, XV and Crosstrek crossovers, Forester and Outback touring SUVs, older Legacy and Levorg models, strong hybrids and a growing electric range. Within the same model, standard audio and Harman Kardon can have completely different speaker counts, impedance, amplification and signal processing.

Focal Australia lists meaningful Subaru applications using Toyota-format Focal Inside products. IS TOY 165 and IS TOY 690 are component systems for selected front locations, while IC TOY 165 is used for selected coaxial positions. The original and V2 Toyota Y-ISO harnesses can connect a compatible non-amplified original head unit to the Impulse 4.320 installation pathway. These local records create a practical starting point, but they do not establish one universal boxed Subaru kit.

Focal’s current public global vehicle selector does not list Subaru as a brand. This makes clear labelling especially important. The Australian table should distinguish a locally documented speaker application from a harness-only record, premium-system exclusion, overseas vehicle or provisional current-model entry.

The safest structure offers two pathways:

• Selected Focal Inside products for exact compatible Subaru vehicles with standard non-amplified audio
• Professionally measured and tailored Focal systems for Harman Kardon, current-generation vehicles, hybrids, EVs, unsupported positions and installations requiring adaptation

Both pathways can deliver a worthwhile improvement. The distinction prevents incorrect purchases, protects the vehicle and gives search engines and answer engines an accurate account of what Focal Australia can genuinely offer.

1. Can the factory audio system in a Subaru be upgraded with Focal?

Yes. Many Subaru factory audio systems can be improved with correctly selected Focal speakers, amplification, DSP, subwoofers and acoustic treatment. The exact products and installation method depend on the model, generation, build date, trim and original audio package.

For selected standard-audio vehicles, Focal Australia lists IS TOY 165 or IS TOY 690 component speakers for front positions and IC TOY 165 coaxial speakers for selected rear or other locations. These vehicle-friendly products can improve vocal definition, mid-bass control, treble detail and useful listening output while retaining the factory head unit and original interior appearance.

Some vehicles also have a local Y-ISO harness record. IW-TOY-YISO and IW-TOY-YISO-V2 are used to integrate the compact Focal Impulse 4.320 amplifier with compatible original non-amplified head units. The harness is only one part of the installation: the system still needs the correct extension and output cables, fused power, ground, compatible speakers and proper amplifier setup.

Other Subarus require a tailored system. A professionally designed installation can use Focal Auditor, Universal, Access, Slatefiber, Flax Evo, K2 Power, K2 Power M or Utopia M products, depending on the available locations, desired performance and budget. Custom spacers, wiring adaptors, amplification, DSP tuning, sub-bass and BAM treatment may be required.

Factory Harman Kardon systems sit outside the basic standard-audio pathway. They use dedicated amplification, extra channels, factory equalisation and often a subwoofer. A simple speaker swap or Y-ISO amplifier addition can create electrical or tonal problems if the original channel loads and filters are not measured.

Before selecting a product, confirm the original speaker count, factory amplifier, separate tweeters, centre channel, subwoofer, impedance, connector and signal bandwidth. Also identify any previous aftermarket radio or wiring work. A proper Subaru audio upgrade begins with the actual vehicle, not a generic parts list.

2. Does Focal offer dedicated Subaru Plug & Play speaker kits?

Focal Australia lists vehicle-friendly Focal Inside speakers and integration products for selected Subaru applications, but there is no single Subaru kit that fits every model or audio system.

The local category currently contains ten products. The main speaker options are IS TOY 165, IS TOY 690 and IC TOY 165. The category also displays Impulse 4.320, ISUB ACTIVE, ISUB ACTIVE 2.1, ISUB TWIN, original and V2 Toyota Y-ISO harnesses, and HILO V3. These items are sold separately and perform different roles.

IS TOY 165 is a 165 mm two-way component kit rated at 60 watts RMS with a nominal 4-ohm impedance. IS TOY 690 uses a larger 150 x 230 mm elliptical woofer and is rated at 75 watts RMS. IC TOY 165 is a coaxial kit intended for selected compatible 165 mm positions. A vehicle that accepts one product at the front does not automatically accept the same product at the rear.

The products use Toyota-format mounting and connection provisions that Focal Australia has locally associated with selected Subaru vehicles. That association can be legitimate, particularly where Subaru and Toyota share components or supplier formats, but it remains vehicle-specific. Focal’s own product guidance requires confirmation of fixing points, depth, connector, window clearance and original audio configuration.

Subaru does not appear in Focal’s current public global Focal Inside brand selector. The accurate wording is therefore selected Focal Australia Subaru applications, not a complete globally documented Focal Subaru Plug & Play range.

Plug & Play also needs qualification. It can mean that compatible factory wiring and locations are retained, but it does not guarantee that every tweeter bracket, connector, panel or speaker position requires no work. The category itself says tweeter plugs and brackets may need adaptation.

The best claim is that Focal Australia provides selected vehicle-friendly Subaru speaker and amplifier-integration options for confirmed standard-audio applications, with broader Focal solutions available through professional system design.

3. Which Subaru models are listed in the Focal Australia compatibility table?

At the time of this audit, the category publishes 31 model or generation rows. They cover:

• Ascent
• BRZ and BRZ II
• XV, Crosstrek and XV e-Boxer variations
• Forester III, IV, V and VI
• Impreza III, IV, V and VI
• Legacy V, VI and VII
• Levorg and Levorg II
• Outback IV, V and VI, plus an incorrect Outback EV row
• Solterra
• Uncharted
• WRX and WRX STI-related rows

This is broader than Subaru Australia’s current vehicle range and includes overseas or questionable records. Ascent was not officially sold new by Subaru Australia. Legacy VII is also an overseas-market generation rather than an Australian new-car application. Levorg II requires care because Australia adopted the WRX Sportswagon name and specification rather than continuing the Japanese-market Levorg identity in the same way.

The table also extends into new vehicles. It includes Forester VI, Solterra and Uncharted, but omits the 2026 Trailseeker. Current-model inclusion does not by itself prove a complete speaker system. The Forester VI row contains only a rear IC TOY 165 entry and a V2 harness, while Outback EV appears to be a mistaken name for a different vehicle or dataset.

The strongest locally supported rows are those that identify a specific speaker product in a specific front or rear field and also appear on the relevant Focal Australia product compatibility page. Even then, the original audio package must be checked. A Harman Kardon-equipped version of an otherwise listed Forester, Outback, Crosstrek, Impreza or WRX is not part of the standard passive-speaker pathway.

Owners should use the table to identify a possible starting point, then confirm the exact car with an Authorised Focal Australia Dealer before purchase.

4. What should be corrected in the Focal Australia Subaru compatibility table?

The table contains useful application data, but its naming, dates and evidence levels need a substantial editorial clean-up.

First, the introduction should stop saying that every row is a complete Focal Inside system. Subaru is absent from Focal’s current public brand selector, and the Australian table mixes speaker records, harness records, overseas models and provisional future-facing entries.

Second, XV and Crosstrek should be separated. Australian vehicles were branded XV through the second generation, while Crosstrek became the local name for the current generation. Crosstrek XV II and Crosstrek XV III are not clean customer-facing descriptions.

Third, review generation dates. Forester IV starts at 2016 in the table even though that generation began earlier. The Impreza III, IV and V ranges do not align cleanly with known generation transitions. Outback IV begins at 2012 despite an earlier generation start, while Outback VI is split at 2019 and 2022 in a way that needs build-date evidence.

Fourth, delete or correct Outback EV. Subaru Australia’s 2026 Outback is not electric. The company’s current EV range comprises Solterra, Trailseeker and Uncharted. If the record was intended to mean Outback VII, it needs the correct name and a new production-vehicle fitment check.

Fifth, correct WRX naming. The 2014-2017 and 2018-2021 rows are both VA-generation cars, likely separated by facelift. The 2022-on row is WRX VB and must not include STI in its name because no production VB WRX STI has been offered.

Sixth, mark Ascent and Legacy VII as overseas-market records. Treat Levorg II separately from Australian WRX Sportswagon. Correct Uncharted to a 2026 Australian model and add Trailseeker informationally without assigning products prematurely.

Finally, add separate fields for factory audio and evidence status. A row should say whether it applies to standard non-amplified audio, excludes Harman Kardon, requires tweeter adaptation, has a confirmed front speaker, has only a rear speaker or lists only a Y-ISO harness.

That structure would make the table more useful for customers and dealers while preventing a general compatibility list from being mistaken for a guaranteed parts prescription.

5. Can a Subaru Forester receive a Focal speaker upgrade?

Yes. Focal Australia lists selected speaker and harness options across Forester III, IV, V and VI records, but the exact generation, build period and factory audio system must be confirmed.

For Forester III, the table lists IS TOY 165 as a front component option and IC TOY 165 in selected coaxial positions. Forester IV and V move to IS TOY 690 at the front with IC TOY 165 at the rear, while selected vehicles also have an original or V2 Toyota Y-ISO harness record for Impulse amplifier integration.

Those recommendations apply only where the physical mounts, connectors and standard non-amplified audio match the local record. The Forester IV date range begins at 2016 in the current table, so earlier fourth-generation vehicles should not be assumed compatible without checking why the local record excludes them.

The 2026 Forester VI requires special care. Its row currently lists IC TOY 165 at the rear and IW-TOY-YISO-V2, but no confirmed front component speaker. A rear speaker and harness record is not a complete Focal Inside system. The installer must inspect the new generation’s front woofer, tweeter, depth, connector and source channels before recommending a full package.

Factory audio differs by grade. Subaru Australia publishes six-speaker standard audio and ten-speaker Harman Kardon systems with subwoofer and amplifier in selected 2026 Forester variants, including higher petrol and hybrid grades. The Harman Kardon system must not use the standard Y-ISO pathway or ordinary passive-speaker recommendation.

Strong-hybrid Forester models also require low-voltage electrical planning and careful cable routing, although normal car-audio products still operate from the vehicle’s low-voltage system. Hybrid power components, orange high-voltage cabling, restraint systems and EyeSight-related hardware must not be disturbed.

A well-designed standard-audio Forester upgrade can improve front-stage clarity, mid-bass impact and touring comfort. Adding a correctly integrated amplifier, compact subwoofer and targeted BAM treatment can create a more complete result, but each stage should be based on the exact vehicle rather than the Forester name alone.

6. Can a Subaru Outback sound system be upgraded with Focal?

Yes. Selected Outback IV, V and VI vehicles have Focal Australia speaker and Y-ISO records, and other generations can be assessed for a tailored Focal system. The model year, generation and audio grade must be established before products are selected.

The current table lists IS TOY 165 for Outback IV, IS TOY 690 for Outback V and VI, and IC TOY 165 for selected front or rear coaxial positions. It also lists the original Y-ISO harness for Outback IV and V, then the V2 harness for Outback VI. These records point to a practical standard-audio upgrade pathway, but the dates need review and the physical connector must still be checked.

Australian Outback generation changes do not line up perfectly with the table’s 2012-2014, 2015-2019, 2019-2022 and 2022-2025 fields. Registration year, model year and production date can differ. An installer should use build data and the actual head unit rather than choosing a speaker or harness from the compliance-plate year alone.

The row named Outback EV must not be published as written. Subaru Australia’s 2026 Outback is a new-generation petrol/turbo AWD vehicle, not an EV. The table’s rear IC TOY 165 and V2 harness record cannot be transferred to Outback VII until the underlying source is identified and a production vehicle is inspected.

Factory audio also changes the answer. MY25 Outback variants include a six-speaker standard system and a nine-speaker Harman Kardon system with subwoofer and amplifier in Touring grades. The 2026 generation offers a six-speaker standard system and a 12-speaker Harman Kardon configuration on higher variants. Those premium systems are not compatible with the ordinary standard-speaker and Y-ISO pathway.

For a standard-audio Outback, the strongest staged approach is normally a verified front component upgrade, suitable rear speakers, correct sealing and BAM treatment, followed by amplification and sub-bass if the owner wants more output and low-frequency extension. For Harman Kardon, each channel must be measured and a separate integration plan developed.

Outback owners often value luggage space, touring reliability and an original-looking interior. The system should therefore use secure mounting, protected wiring and space-efficient bass products while retaining the factory screen, cameras, steering controls, calls, parking tones and EyeSight-related warnings.

7. Can Subaru XV, Crosstrek and Impreza speakers be upgraded?

Yes. Focal Australia lists selected IS TOY 165, IS TOY 690 and IC TOY 165 applications across XV, Crosstrek and Impreza records, but the present naming and generation dates require correction.

For Australian customers, the earlier crossover should be called Subaru XV. The current-generation vehicle is Subaru Crosstrek. The table’s Crosstrek XV, Crosstrek XV II and Crosstrek XV III labels should be replaced with clear model and generation names so owners can identify their vehicle without interpreting internal source terminology.

The first XV record lists IS TOY 165 and IC TOY 165, while the later XV/Crosstrek records use IS TOY 690 at the front and IC TOY 165 at the rear. The separate XV e-Boxer record shows the same basic products as the later XV. That does not mean hybrid and petrol cars can be treated as identical without checking trim, original audio and low-voltage installation requirements.

The current 2026 Crosstrek range includes standard-audio and ten-speaker Harman Kardon grades. The Harman Kardon system uses dedicated amplification and is excluded from the ordinary passive Focal Inside pathway. Even in a standard car, the installer should confirm front woofer size, tweeter bracket, rear position and source connector because the table currently ends the third-generation record at 2025.

The Impreza rows also need generation-date review. The table lists IS TOY 165 for Impreza III and IV, then IS TOY 690 for V and VI, with IC TOY 165 and original or V2 Y-ISO harnesses in various positions. These are potentially useful local records, but a customer-facing guide should include chassis or generation codes and verified Australian dates.

Current Impreza grades again differ by audio system. Subaru Australia identifies a ten-speaker Harman Kardon system with amplifier in the 2.0S, while lower grades use a simpler standard system. A product listed against Impreza VI must not be recommended to both architectures without qualification.

The practical improvement for a compatible standard system is usually clearer front staging, improved speech and vocal definition, stronger mid-bass and less harshness at volume. A compact amplifier and subwoofer can extend performance, while targeted door treatment reduces resonance and improves consistency on coarse Australian road surfaces.

8. Can a Subaru WRX, WRX STI, Levorg or WRX Sportswagon receive a Focal upgrade?

Yes. These performance-oriented Subarus can receive worthwhile Focal audio upgrades, but the exact model identity and factory system matter as much as the speaker diameter.

The current table contains three WRX-related rows. The first two cover 2014-2017 and 2018-2021 vehicles. Both periods belong to the VA generation, so the second row should not be the only one carrying the VA label. If the split represents pre-facelift and facelift vehicles, state that directly and identify any real speaker or head-unit change.

The 2022-2025 row must be renamed WRX VB. It lists IS TOY 690, IC TOY 165 and IW-TOY-YISO-V2, but calls the vehicle WRX/STI. Subaru did not release a production STI version of the VB-generation WRX, so retaining STI in that row creates inaccurate search content and could mislead owners.

Current WRX grades use different audio configurations. Subaru Australia documents ten-speaker Harman Kardon audio with amplification and, on relevant variants, a subwoofer. Those cars require a premium-system assessment. Standard-audio WRX vehicles may follow the local Focal speaker and V2 harness record where the connector, positions and build date are verified.

Older WRX STI models need the same system check. Performance trim does not identify whether the car has the standard head unit, a premium amplifier, a dealer-fitted system or years of aftermarket work. Many used WRX vehicles have had head units, speakers, alarms, gauges or wiring altered, so the installer should inspect polarity, grounding, cable routing, previous splices and door moisture protection.

Levorg I has a local IS TOY 165 and IC TOY 165 record. Levorg II is listed with IS TOY 690 and IC TOY 165, but Australia moved to the WRX Sportswagon name and local specification. Do not use a Japanese Levorg II application as automatic proof for an Australian WRX Sportswagon.

The correct upgrade can preserve the factory screen, steering controls, camera functions and warning sounds while improving staging and output. Performance vehicles also benefit from secure amplifier mounting, rattle control and tuning that remains balanced over tyre and exhaust noise rather than simply increasing treble or bass.

9. Can a Subaru BRZ receive a Focal Plug & Play speaker upgrade?

Yes. Focal Australia lists IS TOY 165 and a Toyota-format Y-ISO harness for both first- and second-generation BRZ records, subject to the exact original audio system and connector.

The BRZ shares substantial engineering with the Toyota 86 or GR86, and Focal currently publishes Toyota GT86 and GR86 applications using IS TOY 165 and optional Impulse amplification. That is relevant supporting evidence because the vehicles share a platform. It is still not permission to copy every Toyota recommendation into every BRZ.

Subaru and Toyota versions can differ by model year, market, head unit, speaker count, trim and optional audio. The installer must check the front door woofer, dashboard tweeter or midrange arrangement, rear speaker positions, impedance, connector and source signal. The current Subaru table only identifies a front component product and harness; it does not establish a complete front, rear and subwoofer package.

The first-generation BRZ row uses 2012-2021, while the second begins in 2021. Build dates and local model-year transitions should be clarified so a 2021 vehicle is not assigned from the year alone. The original and V2 harness question should also be settled from the actual radio connection rather than assumptions about the generation.

A standard-audio BRZ can benefit strongly from a well-installed front component system because the compact cabin places the listener close to the speakers. Correct tweeter level, polarity, woofer sealing and time alignment are important. A small subwoofer can add low-frequency weight without sacrificing most of the luggage area, but seat movement, boot access and spare-wheel requirements must be considered.

Cars with aftermarket head units require a different wiring plan. The Y-ISO harness is intended for a compatible original head unit and Impulse 4.320; it is not normally needed when an aftermarket source provides conventional pre-outs or speaker outputs. Previous modifications should be inspected before new equipment is connected.

The result should remain visually discreet and functionally reliable. A BRZ audio upgrade should not interfere with airbags, seat wiring, vehicle controls or everyday cargo flexibility.

10. Can Subaru Legacy and Ascent factory audio systems be upgraded?

Potentially, but these rows need clear market labelling and careful system confirmation.

Focal Australia lists Legacy V and VI with IS TOY 165 and IC TOY 165 in selected positions. Legacy VII is listed with IS TOY 690 and IC TOY 165. The earlier generations are relevant to used Australian vehicles, while Legacy VII is an overseas-market application because that generation was not sold new through Subaru Australia.

The Legacy dates should be checked against Australian build periods and chassis codes. A long-running model name can include different body styles, infotainment systems and premium-audio options. Sedan and wagon-related layouts must not be merged unless the physical speaker positions and source system are the same.

Older Legacy vehicles may have factory McIntosh, Harman Kardon or another premium system depending on generation and specification. They may also have an aftermarket head unit or repaired wiring. Those systems sit outside the simple standard passive-speaker assumption and require inspection of the amplifier, speaker impedance and channel filtering.

Ascent is listed with IS TOY 690 at the front and IC TOY 165 at the rear. It is a North American-market three-row SUV and was not officially offered new by Subaru Australia. The row can remain useful for privately imported vehicles, but it should be labelled overseas/imported model and should not target ordinary Australian showroom intent.

Imported Ascents can carry complex factory audio, including premium Harman Kardon configurations depending on year and grade. Navigation, telematics, calls, rear-seat use and multiple speaker zones can affect the design. An Australian dealer should obtain the VIN, equipment information and photographs, then inspect the actual system before quoting.

For a compatible standard-audio Legacy or imported Ascent, selected Focal Inside products may provide a clean improvement. For premium audio, unusual imported equipment or unsupported positions, use a tailored solution with signal testing, suitable amplification or DSP and custom mounting as required.

11. Can Subaru Solterra, Trailseeker, Uncharted and hybrid audio systems be upgraded safely?

Yes, an EV or hybrid Subaru can receive an audio upgrade, but the work must be designed around the exact low-voltage system, factory audio architecture and safety requirements.

The Australian category lists Solterra with IS TOY 690, IC TOY 165 and IW-TOY-YISO-V2. It lists Uncharted with IS TOY 165, IC TOY 165 and the V2 harness. These are local compatibility records, but both vehicles have standard and Harman Kardon grades. The products must not be applied to the amplified premium system without a separate integration design.

The Solterra arrived in Australia in 2024. Subaru Australia documents a six-speaker system in the standard grade and a ten-speaker Harman Kardon system with subwoofer and amplifier in Touring. The table’s global 2022 start date should therefore be distinguished from Australian-market availability.

Uncharted is an Australian 2026 model, not a 2025 showroom application. Its specifications include a six-speaker standard system and a ten-speaker Harman Kardon system on higher grades. The table should correct the date and obtain production-vehicle confirmation before treating the listed products as a guaranteed package.

Trailseeker joined the Australian range in 2026 and is absent from the Focal Australia table. The flagship grade has a ten-speaker Harman Kardon system with subwoofer and amplifier. Add it to the informational guide for search coverage, but do not assign Focal Plug & Play products until the speaker positions, connectors, factory amplification and Australian vehicle have been assessed.

Shared Toyota EV engineering does not prove compatibility. Solterra, Uncharted and Trailseeker have relationships with Toyota platforms, but branding, specification, software, audio tuning and connectors can differ. Each Subaru application needs its own evidence.

Normal car-audio equipment operates from the low-voltage system. The installer should confirm the safe fused supply, grounding point, current budget, sleep behaviour and cable route. Orange high-voltage cables, traction-battery components, restraint wiring, crash sensors and charging hardware must not be disturbed.

All external and internal warning sounds must remain operational. This includes the Acoustic Vehicle Alerting System, indicators, parking tones, calls, navigation, driver-assistance warnings and infotainment prompts. A quieter EV cabin also exposes hiss, panel vibration and poor gain structure more clearly, making careful integration and tuning especially valuable.

12. What is the difference between standard Subaru audio and Harman Kardon?

Standard Subaru audio generally uses a simpler speaker count and may power passive speakers directly from the factory head unit or integrated infotainment module. Harman Kardon adds dedicated amplification, more speakers, a subwoofer in many models and vehicle-specific digital processing.

This difference determines whether the ordinary Focal Inside pathway is suitable. The Focal Australia category explicitly states that its Plug & Play speakers are not designed to work with factory-amplified Subaru systems. The original and V2 Y-ISO harnesses are likewise intended for compatible non-amplified head units and the Impulse 4.320.

A standard system can often accept a verified Focal component and coaxial speaker combination. The installer still needs to check impedance, mounting depth, connector, polarity and factory equalisation. Adding Impulse amplification can improve control and output where the correct Y-ISO connection and full-range source signal are available.

A Harman Kardon system is a different architecture. Current Australian examples include ten-speaker systems in Crosstrek, Impreza, WRX, Forester, Solterra, Uncharted and Trailseeker variants. MY25 Outback Touring uses nine speakers, while the 2026 Outback moves to a 12-speaker premium configuration. Exact equipment varies by model and grade.

Premium-system amplifier channels may be individually filtered and equalised. A door woofer may receive only bass or mid-bass, while a dashboard driver receives a separate band. Centre, surround and subwoofer channels can use different impedance and timing. Replacing one driver with a 4-ohm full-range speaker can reduce output, disturb tonal balance or present an unsuitable load.

Harman Kardon does not make an upgrade impossible. A professional installer can measure each channel, determine where a usable signal exists, retain factory functions and design a compatible DSP, amplifier or partial-speaker solution. Sometimes the best approach is to improve selected weak points; in other cases a more extensive system redesign is justified.

The model badge and speaker grille are not enough. Confirm the equipment list, factory amplifier location, speaker count and subwoofer before recommending products or quoting a Plug & Play installation.

13. Will a Subaru audio upgrade retain Starlink, EyeSight alerts and factory controls, and does it need an amplifier or DSP?

A properly designed installation should retain the original Subaru screen, Starlink or other infotainment functions, steering-wheel controls, Bluetooth calls, navigation, reversing camera displays, parking tones and all driver-assistance warnings.

14. Can a subwoofer and Focal BAM improve a Subaru sound system?
