More About the Brand

Daihatsu is a long-running Japanese kei car and compact vehicle specialist with roots in Osaka. Its predecessor, Hatsudoki Seizo Co., Ltd., was founded in 1907 to develop and popularise internal combustion engines during Japan’s industrial expansion, and the modern company identity evolved into Daihatsu Motor Co., Ltd. in 1951. Today the brand is headquartered in Ikeda, Osaka, and has been a wholly owned Toyota subsidiary since 2016, positioning Daihatsu as Toyota’s small-car expertise centre for cost-effective, space-efficient vehicles.

In practical terms, Daihatsu is best known for super-compact city cars, kei cars, kei vans, and kei trucks—high-efficiency “small footprint, big usability” vehicles designed for dense urban environments and value-driven ownership. Signature, high-search models include Tanto, Move, Mira e:S, Hijet (Truck/Cargo), Atrai, Taft, Rocky (compact SUV) and the Copen roadster; outside Japan it also supports light commercial and people-mover style needs with vehicles like Gran Max. Daihatsu’s “innovation” reputation is less about flashy luxury tech and more about packaging efficiency, fuel economy engineering, durable small-displacement powertrains, and practical platforms that scale into affordable mobility—especially across Southeast Asia.

Globally, Daihatsu is strongest in Japan and Southeast Asia, particularly Indonesia, and it has major influence in Malaysia via Perodua, where many high-volume Perodua vehicles use Daihatsu engineering and shared platforms (for example, Rocky/Ativa and Terios/Aruz relationships). Looking forward, Daihatsu’s mission is effectively to deliver affordable, efficient, small-car mobility while rebuilding trust after the safety certification scandal—reforming governance and development processes under tighter Toyota oversight—and pushing toward electrification, including public signals around developing a future battery-electric kei car concept.
