More About the Brand
FPV (Ford Performance Vehicles) was Australia’s factory-backed Ford Falcon performance brand, born in 2002 in Campbellfield, Melbourne (Victoria) as a joint venture between Ford Australia and Prodrive after Prodrive’s purchase of Tickford (linking back to the earlier Ford Tickford Experience era). FPV existed to do one job: build Australian muscle cars with OEM-level engineering, sharper handling, and genuine motorsport credibility. Its core lineup centred on high-performance sedans and performance utes based on the Falcon platform, plus a short-lived performance SUV experiment, the FPV F6X. The headline models that still dominate searches are the FPV GT and GT-P, the F6 Typhoon (sedan) and F6 Tornado (ute), plus work-and-play favourites like the Pursuit and Super Pursuit utes, and later luxury-leaning variants such as G6E Turbo and the value-focused GS.
On technology, FPV’s reputation was built on big, hard-hitting engines and calibration: early Boss 5.4L V8 development for the GT range, the famous turbocharged 4.0L Barra inline-six powering the F6 models, and later the supercharged 5.0L “Miami” V8 program (Boss 315/335/351 outputs) that delivered the brand’s peak-era straight-line pace. FPV’s strongest markets were Australia and New Zealand, with its identity closely tied to local manufacturing and the V8 Supercars spotlight.
FPV’s ownership story also explains its end: Ford brought FPV assets in-house in 2012, then the FPV brand was formally retired/discontinued in 2014 as Ford Australia moved toward local manufacturing shutdown plans, with performance branding rolled forward under Ford’s broader performance strategy.
