The Focal IC VW 165 is a vehicle-specific 2-way coaxial speaker kit designed to improve the clarity, detail and tonal balance of compatible factory audio systems.
Each speaker combines a 165mm Black Polyglass woofer with an integrated aluminium inverted-dome tweeter. This coaxial configuration reproduces midrange, upper-bass and high-frequency information from one compatible factory speaker location.
The IC VW 165 is particularly suitable for supported rear-door and supplementary positions without separate tweeter locations. It may also be used in selected front locations where a coaxial speaker is identified in the Compatibility Guide.
Factory Audio Compatibility
Not compatible with factory amplified or premium Volkswagen audio systems. Designed for compatible non-amplified factory audio systems only. Please refer to the Compatibility Guide or contact your nearest Authorised Focal Australia Dealer to confirm compatibility.
In a compatible non-amplified Volkswagen, the original factory head unit sends powered speaker-level signals directly to the speakers. Replacing supported original speakers with the IC VW 165 can improve clarity and tonal balance while retaining the original radio and integrated vehicle functions.
Factory-amplified and premium systems may use a separate amplifier, active filtering, channel-specific processing or different speaker impedances. Dynaudio, Harman Kardon and other premium configurations require separate assessment.
Compact 2-Way Coaxial Design
The woofer and tweeter are integrated into one speaker assembly. This makes the IC VW 165 suitable for compatible positions that do not provide a separate original tweeter location.
The coaxial arrangement provides a practical way to improve vocal clarity, instrument definition and treble detail without adding visible tweeters or changing the intended interior layout.
How It Differs from the IS VW 165
The IC VW 165 is a coaxial speaker kit, while the IS VW 165 is a component speaker kit. The IC VW 165 combines the woofer and tweeter in one assembly; the IS VW 165 installs separate woofers and tweeters in suitable individual factory locations.
In many compatible systems, an IS VW component kit establishes the primary front soundstage while the IC VW 165 improves supported rear-door positions. The correct product depends on the original speaker arrangement identified for the vehicle.
165mm Black Polyglass Woofer
The 165mm Black Polyglass woofer combines a cellulose pulp base with fine glass microbeads. This construction balances damping and rigidity, helping control resonance while maintaining accurate cone movement.
Vocals and instruments become clearer and easier to distinguish, while drums and bass instruments gain stronger and more controlled mid-bass than many lightweight factory speakers.
Integrated Aluminium Inverted-Dome Tweeter
The aluminium inverted-dome tweeter is positioned at the centre of the coaxial assembly. Its low-directivity design provides broad high-frequency dispersion, helping passengers at different seating positions receive clearer treble detail.
Cymbals, strings, vocal harmonics and subtle recording information become easier to distinguish without requiring a separate visible tweeter installation.
Integrated Frequency Filtering
An integrated crossover divides the audio signal between the Polyglass woofer and aluminium tweeter. The woofer handles the midrange and upper-bass frequencies, while the tweeter reproduces the higher-frequency information.
The integrated design simplifies installation because there is no separate crossover enclosure to mount inside the door or behind the trim.

Efficient 2-Ohm Vehicle-Specific Design
The IC VW 165 has a nominal impedance of 2 ohms and high sensitivity, supporting effective performance from compatible non-amplified factory head units.
The electrical design should not be assumed to suit every factory radio or aftermarket amplifier. Any connected amplifier must be stable at the speaker’s nominal impedance and correctly configured for the installation.
Compatible with Suitable Aftermarket Amplification
The IC VW 165 can be powered by a correctly specified aftermarket amplifier. The Focal Impulse 4.320 may be used in selected non-amplified Volkswagen systems with the required vehicle-specific harness, extension cable, amplifier harness and power wiring.
Amplifier integration is not suitable for factory-amplified or premium Volkswagen systems unless a separate approved solution has been identified.
Vehicle-Specific Plug & Play Integration
The IC VW 165 incorporates dedicated connectors and an integrated mounting spacer for selected compatible factory locations. In confirmed applications, the speakers connect to supported original wiring without cutting or soldering the factory speaker harness.
Once installed, the speakers remain concealed behind the original trim and factory grilles, preserving the interior appearance.
Compatible Applications
The IC VW 165 is listed for selected Volkswagen models and speaker positions, including compatible versions of vehicles such as the Amarok, Atlas, Beetle, Bora, Golf, ID-series vehicles, Jetta, Passat, Polo, T-Cross, T-Roc, Tiguan, Touran, Up and other supported models.
Selected Audi, Jetta, SEAT and Škoda applications may also be supported where the vehicle uses compatible mounting, connectors and audio architecture. Every application must be checked independently.
Pair with Compatible Front Component Speakers
The IC VW 165 can be combined with a compatible Focal Inside component kit such as the IS VW 155, IS VW 165 or IS VW 180. The front component speakers establish the primary soundstage, while the coaxial rear speakers improve passenger coverage and tonal consistency throughout the cabin.
