The Focal IS VW 165 is a vehicle-specific 2-way component speaker kit designed to improve the clarity, detail and tonal balance of compatible Volkswagen factory audio systems.
The kit combines 165mm Black Polyglass woofers with separate aluminium inverted-dome tweeters. This component arrangement provides clearer vocals, improved instrument separation, stronger and more controlled mid-bass, and more detailed high-frequency reproduction than many standard factory speakers.
The IS VW 165 is designed for selected Volkswagen vehicles and may also support compatible Audi, CUPRA, Jetta, SEAT and Škoda applications that share suitable speaker locations, connectors and audio architecture.
Factory Audio Compatibility

In a compatible non-amplified vehicle, the original radio or infotainment unit sends powered speaker-level signals directly to the factory speakers. Replacing supported original speakers with the IS VW 165 can provide a meaningful improvement while retaining the factory head unit and integrated vehicle controls.
Factory-amplified and premium systems may use a separate amplifier, active filtering, channel-specific equalisation, digital signal processing or different speaker impedances. Vehicles equipped with Dynaudio, Harman Kardon or another premium system require separate assessment.
2-Way Component Speaker Design
The IS VW 165 installs its woofers and tweeters in separate compatible factory locations. The Polyglass woofers reproduce midrange and upper-bass frequencies, while the aluminium inverted-dome tweeters reproduce high-frequency detail.
Positioning the tweeters higher in the cabin helps raise the perceived soundstage and place vocals and instruments closer to dashboard level. This creates a wider and more naturally positioned presentation than a basic full-range or coaxial replacement in the lower door.
165mm Black Polyglass Woofers
The 165mm woofers use Focal Black Polyglass cone technology. Fine glass microbeads are applied to a cellulose pulp cone, combining the damping qualities of paper with the added rigidity of glass.
The controlled cone structure improves midrange definition and reduces unwanted resonance. Vocals, guitars, piano and percussion become easier to distinguish, while drums and bass instruments gain stronger and more controlled mid-bass.
Aluminium Inverted-Dome Tweeters
The separate aluminium inverted-dome tweeters provide rapid response and broad high-frequency dispersion. Aluminium increases dome rigidity and helps reduce distortion, allowing cymbals, strings, vocal harmonics and subtle recording details to be reproduced with greater clarity.
The supplied adaptation ring and mounting foams support integration into selected compatible factory tweeter locations. Correct orientation and polarity remain important to achieving a balanced front soundstage.
Integrated Frequency Filtering
The IS VW 165 includes integrated woofer filtering and inline tweeter filtering. These components divide the audio signal between the two drivers so that the woofer handles midrange and upper-bass information while the tweeter reproduces the higher frequencies.
The supplied drivers and filters have been engineered to operate as a matched system.

Efficient Performance from a Compatible Factory Head Unit
The 2-ohm nominal impedance and 93.7dB sensitivity support effective output from compatible non-amplified factory head units. The electrical design is vehicle-specific and should not be assumed to suit every factory radio or aftermarket amplifier.
Actual performance depends on available source power, factory equalisation, installation quality and vehicle acoustics.
Compatible with Suitable Aftermarket Amplification
The IS VW 165 can also be used with a correctly specified aftermarket amplifier. The Focal Impulse 4.320 may be integrated in selected compatible non-amplified Volkswagen systems using the required Volkswagen Y-ISO Harness, extension cable, amplifier harness, power wiring and any additional accessories identified for the vehicle.
Any connected amplifier must be stable with the speaker’s 2-ohm nominal impedance. Amplifier integration is not suitable for factory-amplified or premium Volkswagen audio systems unless a separate approved solution is identified.
Vehicle-Specific Integration
The woofers incorporate dedicated connectors and an integrated mounting spacer for selected compatible factory locations. In confirmed applications, they connect to supported factory wiring without cutting or soldering the original speaker harness.
The tweeters use compatible original high-frequency locations with the supplied adaptation and anti-vibration materials. Once installed, the system remains concealed behind the factory trim and speaker grilles.
Compatible Vehicle Applications
The IS VW 165 is listed for selected Volkswagen Group models and speaker positions. Application groups may include compatible versions of the Amarok, Atlas, Beetle, Bora, Caddy, Eos, Golf, ID.3, ID.4, ID.5, Jetta, Passat, Polo, Scirocco, Touran, Up and other supported vehicles.
Selected Audi, CUPRA, Jetta, SEAT and Škoda applications may also be supported. Every application must be confirmed against the exact vehicle, production year, body style, original audio system and intended speaker position.
Front and Rear Applications
The IS VW 165 is commonly used in compatible front locations with separate woofer and tweeter positions. Some vehicles may also support the component kit in rear locations with separate rear tweeters, while others require the IC VW 165 coaxial kit.
Front and rear products must be confirmed separately because speaker layouts vary between models and production years.
