The difference between sound quality and sound pressure level comes down to what the car audio system is designed to achieve. Sound Quality, often called SQ, focuses on reproducing music as accurately, naturally and enjoyably as possible. Sound Pressure Level, commonly called SPL, focuses on producing very high volume and maximum acoustic output. A sound quality system is designed to make music sound balanced, detailed and realistic. The goal is not simply to make the system loud, but to make vocals, instruments, bass and treble sound clean and properly integrated. In an SQ-focused system, the listener should be able to hear detail, separation and depth in the music without harshness, muddiness or distortion. Sound quality depends on several factors working together. Speaker choice is important, but so are installation, amplification, tuning, speaker placement, sound deadening and system balance.
