A professionally designed Nissan speaker upgrade can deliver clearer vocals, stronger midrange, improved stereo imaging, cleaner volume and deeper bass while retaining the original dashboard, infotainment system and vehicle controls.

The correct solution depends on much more than the Nissan badge or the nominal diameter of the factory speaker.

Nissan vehicles sold in Australia include compact crossovers, family SUVs, work utes, large 4WDs, sports cars, electric vehicles and previous-generation passenger cars. Their factory audio systems range from basic four- or six-speaker arrangements to Bose systems with dedicated amplifiers, centre speakers, additional bass drivers, active equalisation and vehicle-specific signal processing.

Focal currently documents selected Nissan applications through its Focal Inside configurator. These are concentrated on particular Juke, QASHQAI, Pulsar, earlier LEAF and X-TRAIL generations, together with a number of overseas-market Nissan cars and vans.

The current Focal selector does not document every Nissan that appears in the Focal Australia compatibility table. Popular Australian vehicles including Navara, Patrol, current Pathfinder, X-TRAIL T33, QASHQAI J12, Ariya and the current Z require separate confirmation rather than automatic Plug & Play claims.

The Focal Australia Nissan category currently displays:

• IS RNS 165 component speakers
• IC RNS 165 coaxial speakers
• IS REN 130 component speakers
• IC REN 130 coaxial speakers
• Impulse 4.320 amplifier
• ISUB ACTIVE powered subwoofer
• ISUB ACTIVE 2.1 amplified subwoofer system

These products do not form a complete vehicle-specific package for every Nissan in Australia. Some are direct-fit candidates only in documented applications. Some are integration products. Some are universal bass solutions. Focal now identifies IS REN 130 and IC REN 130 as no longer available, and the table also refers extensively to the discontinued IS RNI 690 even though it is not displayed as a purchasable category product.

For vehicles without current Focal Inside documentation, a tailored installation can use a broader range of Focal speakers, suitable mounting adaptors, correct wiring, amplification, digital signal processing and acoustic treatment. That can produce an excellent result, but it should be described honestly as a professionally integrated custom solution rather than a guaranteed no-modification kit.

1. Can a Nissan factory audio system be upgraded with Focal?

Yes. Most Nissan factory audio systems can be improved with correctly selected Focal equipment.

A suitable system may include:

• Replacement front component speakers
• Replacement rear coaxial or component speakers
• Improved tweeters
• A compact four-channel amplifier
• A multi-channel amplifier with DSP
• A powered or passive subwoofer
• A custom subwoofer enclosure
• Focal BAM acoustic treatment
• Vehicle-specific or custom mounting adaptors
• Correctly terminated connector leads
• Measurement and acoustic tuning

Potential improvements include:

• Clearer vocals and spoken content
• Better instrument separation
• More natural midrange
• Smoother, more detailed treble
• Stronger mid-bass
• Reduced distortion at higher volume
• Improved front soundstage
• Deeper and more controlled bass
• Better clarity over tyre, wind and engine noise

Before recommending products, the installer should identify:

• Exact Nissan model and generation
• Chassis or platform code
• Build month and year
• Australian-delivered or imported specification
• Body style and cabin configuration
• Factory speaker count and locations
• Standard, Bose or another factory audio system
• Presence and location of the factory amplifier
• Original speaker impedance
• Factory speaker dimensions and mounting depth
• Factory connector type
• Source-signal voltage and frequency range
• Factory equalisation and crossover filtering
• Telephone, navigation, parking and warning-sound routing
• Active noise-control functions
• Previous audio modifications

A factory location described as 165mm or 6×9-inch does not automatically accept an aftermarket speaker of the same nominal size. Basket shape, bolt pattern, depth, window clearance, grille clearance, sealing, connector design, impedance and factory amplification all affect compatibility.

2. Does Focal offer dedicated Nissan Plug & Play speaker kits?

Yes, for selected vehicles and positions. It is not a universal Nissan range.

The live Focal Inside Nissan selector currently lists 24 model applications. Examples relevant to Australian owners include selected:

• Juke
• QASHQAI J11
• Pulsar C12
• First-generation LEAF ZE0
• X-TRAIL T32

The selector also contains overseas or imported-market vehicles including Almera, Kicks, Note, Rogue, Sentra, Serena, Sylphy, Teana, Townstar, Urvan, Versa and several vans.

For a documented application, Focal may specify:

• IS RNS 165 component speakers for the front doors
• IC RNS 165 coaxial speakers for the rear doors
• An Impulse 4.320 amplifier
• A model-appropriate Y-ISO harness
• An extension cable
• ISUB ACTIVE 2.1 or another bass solution

However, Focal’s own application pages require compatibility to be checked before purchase. They warn that adjustments may be necessary and exclude vehicles equipped with the original premium hi-fi option from the standard installation shown.

This distinction is critical. The phrase Plug & Play does not mean:

• Every Nissan uses the same connector
• Every model year has the same speaker basket
• Every tweeter clips into the original bracket without adaptation
• Every factory amplifier accepts the same replacement speaker
• Every Y-ISO harness works with every Nissan head unit
• No trim removal, power wiring or tuning is required
• A standard-audio solution can be fitted to a Bose system

Plug & Play should mean that a specific product has been confirmed for a particular vehicle, speaker location and factory configuration, with limited and documented installation requirements.

3. Which Nissan models have the clearest current Focal Inside applications?

The strongest applications are the models for which the current Focal selector shows an actual product arrangement rather than a general table entry or speaker-size note.

Nissan Juke

Focal currently lists the Nissan Juke from 2010 onward and shows IS RNS 165 front component speakers with IC RNS 165 rear coaxial speakers. An amplified configuration may add the Impulse 4.320, extension cable and the Renault/Dacia Y-ISO harness for the specifically documented factory system.

The broad date range still requires care. It spans different Juke generations and audio specifications. A vehicle with a factory premium hi-fi option is excluded from the standard configuration shown by Focal.

Nissan QASHQAI J11

For the second-generation QASHQAI, Focal documents IS RNS 165 front speakers and IC RNS 165 rear speakers. Focal also shows powered and amplified configurations for the compatible standard audio system.

This application must not be carried automatically to the later J12 QASHQAI. The current Australian J12 can also be equipped with a ten-speaker Bose system, Acoustimass bass box and digital amplifier, which is a different integration task.

Nissan Pulsar C12

Focal documents selected 2014–2018 Pulsar vehicles. Depending on the installation level, the selector shows component and coaxial speaker options, plus potential amplification and a bass solution.

Australian-delivered body style, build date, original speaker positions and factory audio configuration still need confirmation.

Nissan LEAF ZE0

Focal documents the first-generation LEAF from 2011–2018 with IS RNS 165 front speakers and IC RNS 165 rear speakers for the compatible standard audio system.

This does not establish compatibility with the later ZE1 LEAF. Electric-vehicle installation precautions also apply even when the speakers themselves are confirmed.

Nissan X-TRAIL T32

Focal’s current selector documents the third-generation X-TRAIL for 2014–2017 with IS RNS 165 front and IC RNS 165 rear speakers. An Impulse 4.320 system is shown only for the compatible standard audio configuration.

The Australian category table extends the T32 to 2021 and lists the T33 separately. Those wider date ranges should be treated as Australian compatibility data requiring confirmation, not as evidence that the live Focal application applies unchanged.

4. What do the Nissan-compatible Focal products actually do?

The products in the category serve different purposes and should not be presented as interchangeable Nissan kits.

IS RNS 165

IS RNS 165 is a 165mm two-way component system with separate woofers and tweeters. Focal specifies a 57.1mm mounting depth, 4-ohm nominal impedance, 60-watt RMS rating and high sensitivity.

It is a strong candidate for the front doors of documented Nissan and Renault-alliance applications. The separate tweeter supports better soundstage height and detail, but some vehicles may still require plug or bracket adaptation.

IC RNS 165

IC RNS 165 is a 165mm two-way coaxial kit, commonly shown by Focal in compatible rear-door positions. It places the tweeter with the woofer and is useful where the factory location does not provide a separate tweeter position.

Its 66mm mounting depth is greater than the IS RNS 165 woofer depth, so physical clearance must be checked rather than assuming that the two products fit the same locations.

IS RNI 690

IS RNI 690 is a shallow 6×9-inch component kit previously cross-listed for a number of Nissan and Renault applications. Focal now states that this product is no longer available.

The current Nissan compatibility table repeatedly lists IS RNI 690 for vehicles including Navara, Patrol, Frontier, Armada, Maxima, Titan and X-TRAIL T33 while also marking it out of stock. Those rows do not provide customers with a purchasable front-speaker solution and should be updated, hidden or clearly labelled as historical data.

IS REN 130 and IC REN 130

These older 130mm Renault-format kits appear in a small number of Nissan table rows. Focal now identifies both products as no longer available. They should not remain prominent category products unless Focal Australia has confirmed genuine remaining stock and a support plan.

NISSAN Y-ISO HARNESS

The Nissan Y-ISO harness is designed to connect selected original Nissan head units to the Focal Impulse 4.320 amplifier and compatible extension cables. Focal describes it as intended for vehicles after 2008, but this broad description does not override model-specific electrical checks.

It is not:

• A speaker mounting adaptor
• A replacement for the required extension cable
• A main amplifier power cable
• A universal connection for every Nissan after 2008
• A Bose-system integration interface
• A solution for an aftermarket head unit

Renault/Dacia Y-ISO Harness

Some Nissan vehicles share head-unit or platform architecture with Renault products. Focal’s own Juke, QASHQAI J11, LEAF ZE0 and X-TRAIL T32 installation pages currently show the Renault/Dacia Y-ISO harness in particular amplified configurations.

The correct harness must therefore be selected from the exact Focal application, connector inspection and head-unit identification. Choosing only by vehicle badge is not sufficient.

HILO V3 and powered subwoofers

HILO V3 is a universal high-to-low-level signal converter. ISUB ACTIVE, ISUB ACTIVE 2.1 and ISUB TWIN are compact bass-system products. They may form part of a Nissan installation, but they are not direct replacement speakers for a specific Nissan location.

5. Can a Nissan Navara speaker system be upgraded?

Yes. The Navara is a strong candidate for a professionally designed audio upgrade, particularly where road, diesel-engine, tyre and touring noise reduce the clarity of the factory system.

Potential goals include:

• Clearer telephone calls and podcasts
• Improved vocals at motorway speeds
• Stronger mid-bass without excessive door vibration
• Better front-stage imaging
• More controlled bass
• Higher clean output for long-distance touring
• Retention of the factory head unit and steering controls

The current Focal Australia table lists D23 Navara Double Cab and “Simple Cab” with IS RNI 690, IC RNS 165 and IW-NIS-YISO. This row requires major revision:

• The table dates D23 from 2010, which predates the Australian D23 generation.
• “Simple Cab” should use the appropriate Australian body description, normally Single Cab.
• IS RNI 690 is discontinued and marked out of stock.
• The rear-speaker arrangement varies by Single Cab, King Cab and Dual Cab.
• The Y-ISO harness must be confirmed against the actual head unit and factory amplification.
• The all-new Navara must not inherit D23 fitment automatically.

A Navara installation should also consider:

• Bullbar, driving-light and UHF wiring
• Auxiliary batteries and DC-DC chargers
• Solar controllers and inverters
• Canopies and touring accessories
• Water crossings, dust and vibration
• Limited space behind seats
• Under-seat clearance
• The need to retain load and passenger space

Where a current direct-fit product is not documented, an Authorised Focal Australia Dealer can measure the factory locations and create suitable adaptors for a broader Focal range. A compact amplifier, DSP and carefully located subwoofer can provide a far more complete improvement than replacing speakers by size alone.

6. Can a Nissan Patrol audio system be upgraded?

Yes, but the exact Y62 grade and factory system are critical.

The Nissan Patrol is a large cabin with significant road, tyre and wind noise, particularly when fitted with all-terrain tyres, roof racks, towing equipment or touring accessories. A worthwhile upgrade may require more than a simple front-speaker replacement.

The current Focal Australia table lists the Y62 Patrol with IS RNI 690 front speakers, IC RNS 165 rear speakers and a Nissan Y-ISO harness. That should not be presented as a current complete Plug & Play package because:

• IS RNI 690 is discontinued.
• Focal’s live Nissan selector does not currently list Patrol.
• The table’s 2010–2023 period does not represent every current Australian Y62.
• Patrol grades can have materially different factory audio systems.
• Current Ti-L specifications include a 13-speaker Bose system.

A standard six-speaker Patrol and a 13-speaker Bose Patrol require different design work.

A Bose-equipped vehicle may include:

• A dedicated multi-channel amplifier
• Low-impedance speakers
• Centre and surround channels
• Vehicle-specific equalisation
• Active crossover filtering
• A factory subwoofer or dedicated bass channels
• Telephone, navigation and warning-sound routing

Replacing individual speakers without testing these channels can reduce output, alter tonal balance or overload the factory amplifier.

A complete Patrol upgrade may involve compatible front speakers, rear speakers, a signal-integration DSP, dedicated amplification, a removable or custom subwoofer and acoustic treatment. The installation should also preserve cargo capacity, third-row operation, access to the spare wheel and any touring electrical equipment.

7. Can an X-TRAIL or QASHQAI audio system be upgraded?

Yes, but generation and factory audio package must be separated clearly.

X-TRAIL T32

Focal currently documents a 2014–2017 X-TRAIL T32 application using IS RNS 165 front and IC RNS 165 rear speakers for a compatible standard audio system. It also shows an Impulse 4.320 configuration with the required accessories.

Later Australian T32 vehicles may still be suitable, but the build date, factory connector, speaker frame, head unit and audio option should be checked rather than relying on the nameplate alone.

X-TRAIL T33

The Focal Australia table lists IS RNI 690, IC RNS 165 and IW-NIS-YISO for the T33. The front product is discontinued, and the live Focal selector does not currently list the T33.

Current Australian T33 vehicles can have:

• A six-speaker standard system
• A ten-speaker Bose premium system in selected grades
• Active noise cancellation in selected configurations
• Petrol or e-POWER drivetrains

These differences affect speaker impedance, available signal, amplifier integration and tuning. The Bose and standard systems must not share the same blanket recommendation.

QASHQAI J11

The J11 has one of the clearest current Focal applications. IS RNS 165 and IC RNS 165 are shown for compatible standard-audio vehicles, with optional powered or amplified configurations.

QASHQAI J12

The later J12 is not currently shown in Focal’s Nissan selector. Selected Australian grades use a ten-speaker Bose system with a digital amplifier and Acoustimass bass box.

The J12 therefore needs an inspection-led approach. A complete system may retain the Bose amplifier and replace only confirmed compatible speakers, or it may use specialist signal integration, DSP and additional amplification. The correct path depends on measurement, not on carrying J11 products forward.

8. Can a Pathfinder, Juke, LEAF or Ariya be upgraded?

Yes, although the level of confirmed Focal coverage differs substantially.

Pathfinder

The current Focal Australia table contains overlapping and inconsistent Pathfinder entries, including a misspelt “Pathfinde II” row and several generations with only a generic 6×9-inch note.

Focal’s live Nissan selector does not currently list Pathfinder. The latest Australian R53 Pathfinder can have a standard six-speaker system, but this does not confirm that a generic 6×9-inch speaker or Nissan Y-harness is an exact fit.

Earlier R51 and R52 vehicles may be suitable for tailored Focal systems after checking the doors, tweeters, factory amplifier, Bose option and original speaker impedance.

Juke

Selected Juke applications are documented by Focal, making this one of the more suitable Nissan models for Focal Inside-style upgrades. The precise build date and factory hi-fi option must still be checked.

The table’s speculative “Juke III 2026–” harness-only row should be removed until a real model application and production vehicle are documented.

LEAF

Focal documents the 2011–2018 first-generation LEAF. The later ZE1 table entry includes only a rear coaxial recommendation and harness, which should not be presented as a complete verified vehicle system without current supporting documentation.

In an EV, installation must avoid interference with:

• High-voltage cabling
• Traction-battery components
• Charging equipment
• Battery cooling and ventilation
• Emergency isolation points
• Manufacturer service access

The vehicle should be tested through start-up, shutdown, charging, sleep and restart cycles after installation.

Ariya

Ariya is now part of Nissan Australia’s vehicle range, but Focal’s live Nissan selector does not currently list it. The Australian category table contains “6×9 size or 6.5, need to check” and a rear IC RNS 165 suggestion.

That is a research note, not confirmed compatibility. Ariya should be presented as a specialist EV integration project until exact speaker, connector, impedance, amplifier and factory-system data are verified.

9. Can Nissan Z, 350Z, 370Z, GT-R and older passenger cars be upgraded?

Yes. Sports cars and older Nissan passenger vehicles can respond extremely well to a properly designed Focal installation.

350Z and 370Z

These cabins can benefit from improved front speakers, controlled bass and careful reduction of trim resonance. Available space, Bose equipment, factory amplifier routing and the original subwoofer arrangement differ between model and grade.

The table lists IS RNS 165 for both vehicles and a Nissan Y-harness for the 370Z, but Bose-equipped cars must be treated separately from the standard system.

Current Nissan Z

The table contains only a front “6×9 size” note and IC RNS 165 for the rear. A nominal speaker size is not an installation specification. The current Z requires inspection of mounting depth, basket, connector, Bose option, amplifier and available signal before a product is recommended.

Nissan GT-R

The table should use the correct GT-R model name. GT-R interiors, model years and premium factory audio arrangements vary, and the high-value vehicle warrants careful, reversible installation and comprehensive function testing.

Pulsar, Maxima, Altima, Micra, Tiida and other passenger cars

Many older Nissans use speaker sizes that can be adapted to Focal products, and selected models have Focal Inside documentation. However, the Australian category table includes overseas generations, date errors and products no longer available.

For example, Altima V L33 20013–2020 contains an obvious date typo. Other table names such as Liwie, Vera and Tilda should be checked against the intended market model names before being published as customer-facing compatibility data.

Older vehicles may also have:

• Brittle mounting clips
• Degraded foam seals
• Previous aftermarket wiring
• Failed factory amplifiers
• Damaged speaker cones
• Non-original head units
• Water ingress inside doors
• Trim rattles and resonance

These factors should be corrected as part of the installation rather than concealed by a new speaker.

10. Can a Nissan Bose audio system be upgraded?

Potentially, but it is not the same task as upgrading a standard Nissan audio system.

Current or recent Australian examples include:

• A ten-speaker Bose system in selected X-TRAIL grades
• A ten-speaker Bose system with Acoustimass bass box and digital amplifier in selected QASHQAI grades
• A 13-speaker Bose system in selected Patrol grades
• Bose systems in selected Z, 350Z, 370Z, GT-R and earlier Nissan vehicles

A Bose system may use:

• Low-impedance speakers
• A dedicated factory amplifier
• Centre and surround channels
• Multiple bass drivers
• Active crossover filtering
• Vehicle-specific equalisation
• Speed-dependent processing
• Active noise cancellation
• Telephone and navigation routing
• Parking and driver-assistance warning sounds

Before replacing a Bose speaker, the installer should measure:

• Original speaker impedance
• Amplifier output voltage
• Frequency range supplied to each channel
• Active crossover points
• Signal polarity
• Factory equalisation
• Volume-dependent processing
• Centre and surround content
• Bass-channel content
• Active noise-control behaviour
• Telephone, navigation and warning-sound routing

The standard Nissan or Renault Y-ISO amplifier harness must not be assumed compatible with Bose. It is designed around selected original head-unit outputs and the Impulse 4.320, not around bypassing or integrating every Bose amplifier.

A suitable Bose upgrade may retain the factory head unit and amplifier while replacing only measured, electrically compatible speakers. A more ambitious system may use a specialist interface or high-level input, multi-channel DSP, additional amplification and professional tuning.

Replacing every speaker is not automatically the best strategy. Improving the primary front soundstage, integrating controlled bass and correcting the acoustic response can deliver a better result with less unnecessary intervention.

11. Can the original Nissan head unit and vehicle controls be retained?

In most modern Nissan installations, retaining the original head unit is the preferred approach.

Depending on model and grade, the factory system may control or display:

• Radio and digital media
• Bluetooth calls and streaming
• Apple CarPlay and Android Auto
• Satellite navigation
• Factory microphone
• Voice recognition
• Steering-wheel controls
• Reversing camera
• Around View Monitor
• Parking information
• Vehicle settings
• Driver-assistance settings
• Audible warnings
• e-POWER information
• EV range and charging information
• Connected services

Replacing the source unit can affect functions unrelated to music.

A compatible speaker-only Focal upgrade can retain the source system while improving the acoustic components downstream. Where additional amplification is required, the correct harness or signal interface can preserve the original system without cutting the factory loom.

Before installation, the dealer should test:

• Speaker-level outputs
• Output voltage
• Frequency response
• Factory equalisation
• Signal polarity
• Available full-range channels
• Balance and fade
• Telephone-audio routing
• Navigation-prompt routing
• Parking-warning routing
• Driver-assistance warning routing
• Start-up and shutdown behaviour

All affected functions should be tested again after the upgrade.

12. Does a Nissan speaker upgrade require an amplifier or DSP?

Not every upgrade requires both.

Efficient, electrically compatible Focal speakers may provide a worthwhile improvement from a compatible standard factory head unit. This can suit an owner seeking clearer vocals, improved treble, better tonal balance and cleaner moderate-volume performance.

An aftermarket amplifier may provide:

• Greater clean volume
• Improved speaker control
• Increased headroom
• Stronger dynamics
• Better mid-bass
• Reduced distortion
• Power for an additional subwoofer

The Focal Impulse 4.320 can be used in selected installations with the correct Nissan or Renault/Dacia Y-ISO harness, extension cable and power supply. Compatibility depends on the exact factory head unit and non-amplified audio configuration.

It should not be assumed compatible with:

• Bose audio
• Another factory-amplified system
• An aftermarket head unit
• Modified factory wiring
• A vehicle outside the documented connector and production range
• A harness-only compatibility row with no complete installation specification

A DSP can allow the installer to:

• Measure the factory signal
• Correct selected factory equalisation
• Set crossover frequencies
• Balance individual speakers
• Adjust time alignment
• Improve stereo imaging
• Integrate a subwoofer
• Manage centre and surround channels
• Create driver-focused or all-seat tuning presets

DSP is particularly valuable in Bose, multi-channel and premium Focal systems. It cannot restore frequency information that is completely absent from the selected input channels, which is why source-signal measurement comes before equipment selection.

13. Can a subwoofer be added to a Nissan?

Yes. A correctly integrated subwoofer can deliver a greater perceived improvement than asking replacement door speakers to reproduce deep bass they were never designed to handle.

ISUB ACTIVE 2.1 can amplify its own bass channel and the front speakers in a compatible design. ISUB ACTIVE is a compact powered bass solution. ISUB TWIN uses two shallow woofers and requires suitable amplification and enclosure planning.

These products are not Nissan-specific direct replacements merely because they appear in the Nissan category.

The installation must set crossover frequency, level, phase, polarity and delay correctly. Excessive bass boost from a weak or heavily equalised factory signal can increase distortion without producing controlled low-frequency output.

For Navara and Patrol touring vehicles, the enclosure must also be secured properly and must not compromise passenger safety, access to recovery equipment or the practical use of the cargo area.

14. Can Focal BAM acoustic treatment improve a Nissan?
