The Focal IW SPK SIM is a speaker impedance simulator designed for selected Focal Inside amplifier integrations where disconnecting the original speakers may cause the factory head unit to detect an unexpected electrical load.
Some modern factory radios monitor the connected speaker circuits. When the original speakers are disconnected and the audio signal is redirected through an aftermarket amplifier, the factory head unit may interpret the changed load as a disconnected speaker or electrical fault.
In compatible applications, the IW SPK SIM presents the required simulated load to the original head unit, helping the factory audio source continue operating correctly as part of the approved Focal Inside system.
Factory Audio Compatibility
Not compatible with factory amplified or premium Volkswagen audio systems. Designed for compatible non-amplified factory audio systems only. Please refer to the Compatibility Guide or contact your nearest Authorised Focal Australia Dealer to confirm compatibility.
The IW SPK SIM is intended for selected installations where a compatible original head unit directly powers and monitors the factory speaker circuits. Factory-amplified and premium systems use a different signal path and require separate assessment.
What the IW SPK SIM Does
The IW SPK SIM compensates for the electrical effect of disconnecting original speakers in selected compatible factory-audio systems. It provides a simulated speaker load where the head unit expects to detect the original circuits.
This can help prevent speaker-fault detection, loss of output from monitored channels, audio-system protection behaviour or diagnostic errors associated with an unexpected load.
The exact behaviour varies between vehicles and head units. The simulator should only be installed where the current Focal Inside Harness Compatibility Guide specifically identifies it as required.
What the IW SPK SIM Does Not Do
– It does not increase amplifier power.
– It does not improve sound quality by itself.
– It does not correct factory equalisation or processing.
– It does not provide time alignment or digital signal processing.
– It does not replace a vehicle-specific Y-ISO Harness.
– It does not replace the Focal Impulse 4.320 amplifier.
– It does not supply electrical power to the amplifier.
– It does not make a factory-amplified or premium system compatible.
– It does not correct an unsuitable amplifier-to-speaker impedance match.
Designed for Selected Factory Head Units
The IW SPK SIM is intended for selected original factory head units that monitor the connected speaker load. It is generally used where the factory source remains installed and its speaker-level outputs are routed through an approved Focal Inside amplifier configuration.
It is not generally required when an aftermarket head unit replaces the original radio, as aftermarket sources normally use a conventional amplifier connection method.
Designed for Selected Impulse 4.320 Integrations
The IW SPK SIM can be used as part of selected Focal Inside systems incorporating the Impulse 4.320 compact 4-channel amplifier. The factory audio signal is routed through the correct vehicle-specific harness and extension cabling to the amplifier, while the simulator maintains the required load at the factory-head-unit side where necessary.
The IW SPK SIM is not automatically required for every Impulse 4.320 installation.
ISO Connections
The IW SPK SIM uses ISO connections to integrate into selected compatible Focal Inside cabling systems. The connectors provide a clean and serviceable installation method in confirmed applications.
Plug & Play describes the approved connection system; it does not mean the simulator can be connected to any ISO plug or installed in any vehicle without confirming the complete system arrangement.
Additional Components Are Required
The IW SPK SIM is one accessory within a complete powered Focal Inside installation. Depending on the vehicle and proposed system, additional components may include:
– Focal Impulse 4.320 amplifier
– Vehicle-specific Focal Y-ISO Harness
– IMP EXTENSION I/O 150 or another compatible extension cable
– IW IMP 2.1 or IW IMP 2.2 amplifier harness
– Power Supply Set or suitable fused amplifier power wiring
– Ground cable
– Compatible Focal Inside front and rear speakers
– A suitable Focal subwoofer where required
Required Only in Selected Vehicles
Many compatible vehicles use a Focal Y-ISO Harness and Impulse 4.320 without requiring a speaker impedance simulator. Other vehicles require the IW SPK SIM because the factory head unit monitors the speaker circuits in a way that affects the proposed amplifier installation.
The simulator should not be added solely because the vehicle is a Volkswagen or because an Impulse 4.320 amplifier is being installed.
Selected Volkswagen Applications
The IW SPK SIM is specified for selected Volkswagen models and factory head-unit configurations. Application groups may include particular versions of the Golf 7, Golf 8, ID.3, ID.4, ID.5, ID.6, ID.7, ID. Buzz and ID. Buzz Cargo.
These model names do not confirm that every production year, trim grade or factory audio configuration requires the simulator. The exact vehicle and proposed Focal system must be checked in the current Harness Compatibility Guide.
The Simulator and Y-ISO Harness Perform Different Functions
The vehicle-specific Y-ISO Harness connects the factory head-unit wiring to the Focal Inside amplifier cabling system. The IW SPK SIM provides a simulated electrical load where the factory head unit requires it.
The two products do not replace each other. Where both are specified, they must be installed in the correct positions within the approved system configuration.
Factory Equalisation May Remain
The IW SPK SIM does not change the audio signal produced by the factory head unit. Equalisation, bass reduction, frequency filtering, volume-dependent processing or channel-specific adjustments applied by the source may remain after the amplifier and speakers are installed.
Vehicles requiring signal correction, channel summing, time alignment or advanced tuning may need a digital signal processor or another integration solution.
Professional Installation Recommended
Professional installation is recommended. The installer must determine whether the vehicle has a compatible non-amplified system, whether the factory head unit monitors speaker load, whether the IW SPK SIM is required, which Y-ISO Harness and amplifier cables are needed, and how the complete system should be powered and configured.
Incorrectly adding or omitting the simulator may result in an unreliable or non-functional installation.
