Clearer BMW Sound from a Shallow-Mount Component Speaker Kit
The Focal IS BMW 100L is a vehicle-specific 2-way component speaker kit designed to improve clarity, tonal balance and soundstage definition in selected BMW-family factory audio systems.
The kit combines 100mm Black Polyglass woofers with separate aluminium/magnesium inverted-dome tweeters. This component arrangement delivers clearer vocals, improved instrument separation, stronger and more controlled mid-bass, and more detailed high-frequency reproduction.
The L version uses a shallow 36mm mounting depth with the driver assembly positioned forward in the vehicle-specific chassis. It is intended for selected locations where the standard-depth IS BMW 100 may not provide the required rear clearance.
BMW Factory Audio Compatibility
Compatible with selected BMW vehicles equipped with Standard Audio, Hi-Fi, Top Hi-Fi or Harman Kardon systems where specifically listed. Compatibility varies by model, production year, market, speaker position and factory audio configuration. BMW, MINI and related vehicles can use different factory amplifiers, speaker impedances, connectors, equalisation and channel processing. Physical fitment does not automatically confirm electrical or acoustic compatibility with every factory audio system.

2-Way BMW Component Speaker Design
The woofer and tweeter install in separate compatible factory locations. The Polyglass woofer reproduces midrange and upper-bass information, while the separate tweeter handles treble and fine high-frequency detail.
A higher tweeter position can lift the perceived soundstage and place vocals and instruments closer to dashboard level for a wider and more focused presentation.
100mm Black Polyglass Woofers
Focal’s Black Polyglass cone technology combines a cellulose pulp base with fine glass microbeads. The construction balances damping and rigidity to control resonance and improve midrange definition.
The 100mm measurement refers to the woofer. The separate high-frequency driver is an aluminium/magnesium inverted-dome tweeter and should not be described as a 100mm tweeter.
Aluminium/Magnesium Inverted-Dome Tweeters
The separate aluminium/magnesium inverted-dome tweeters provide broad dispersion and controlled high-frequency response. Aluminium contributes rigidity, while magnesium adds damping.
Cymbals, strings, vocal harmonics and subtle recording detail become easier to distinguish. Correct tweeter location, orientation and polarity remain important.
Stronger Mid-Bass and More Defined Midrange
The published 80Hz-23kHz frequency response supports clear midrange and useful upper-bass and mid-bass reproduction. Drums and bass instruments gain improved definition and integration with vocals and higher-frequency detail.
The IS BMW 100L is not a replacement for BMW under-seat woofers or a dedicated subwoofer. Those drivers remain responsible for the lowest bass frequencies.

The 89.5dB figure is sensitivity, not maximum SPL. The 52mm dimension is the approximate overall speaker depth; the technical drawing shows approximately 36mm behind the mounting surface.
Difference Between IS BMW 100L and IS BMW 100
The IS BMW 100L uses a shallower behind-surface mounting depth than the standard IS BMW 100. Its vehicle-specific frame positions more of the driver assembly forward to provide additional clearance behind the factory mounting surface.
The two products should not be treated as universally interchangeable. Use the current Compatibility Guide to select the correct chassis for the exact vehicle and speaker position.
4-Ohm Design for Compatible Factory and Aftermarket Systems
The IS BMW 100L has a nominal impedance of 4 ohms. It may operate in selected compatible factory systems and can also be used with a correctly specified aftermarket amplifier.
Speaker fitment and amplifier compatibility are separate checks. The connected amplifier must be suitable for the impedance, power handling and factory signal configuration.
Vehicle-Specific Plug & Play Integration
The IS BMW 100L uses dedicated vehicle connections and mounting provisions for selected compatible factory locations. In confirmed applications, compatible original speaker wiring can remain intact.
Plug & Play describes the dedicated connections and mounting geometry used in supported applications. It does not mean universal fitment or guarantee that every installation can be completed without careful trim removal, sealing, replacement clips or minor adjustment.
Compatible BMW, Alpina BMW, MINI, Rolls-Royce and Toyota Supra Applications
The IS BMW 100L is listed for selected BMW and Alpina BMW passenger vehicles, selected MINI models, selected Rolls-Royce speaker locations and Toyota Supra applications.
These are broad application groups rather than confirmation that every model year, body style, market specification, audio package or speaker location is compatible.
Front, Rear and Rear-Shelf Positions Can Differ
Depending on the vehicle, the IS BMW 100L may be specified for front, rear or rear-shelf positions. A kit confirmed for one position should not automatically be assumed to fit another.
Other locations may require IS BMW 100, IC BMW 100L, IC BMW 100, ICC BMW 100 or another dedicated Focal Inside speaker.
Build a Complete Focal Inside BMW Audio System
A complete upgrade can combine the IS BMW 100L with compatible rear speakers, the ICC BMW 100 centre channel and correctly matched BMW under-seat woofers.
BMW under-seat woofers are available in different impedances. The correct 2-ohm, 4-ohm or 8-ohm version must be selected for the original factory system and proposed amplification.
Retain the Original BMW Interior
In a confirmed application, the IS BMW 100L remains concealed behind compatible original trim and factory speaker grilles. The dashboard, doors, seating area and vehicle controls retain their original appearance.
The installation can remain substantially reversible when the original wiring, connectors, mounting points and surrounding trim are preserved.
