Mercedes-Benz Factory Audio Compatibility

Mercedes-Benz vehicles can use different factory amplifiers, speaker impedances, connectors, equalisation and channel-specific processing. A speaker that physically fits a factory location is not automatically compatible with every original audio configuration.

2-Way Mercedes-Benz Component Speaker Design
The 100mm Flax driver and aluminium tweeter install in separate compatible factory locations. The midrange driver reproduces vocals and instruments, while the separate tweeter handles treble and fine high-frequency detail.
Positioning the tweeter higher in the cabin helps lift the perceived soundstage and can place vocals and instruments closer to dashboard level for a wider and more focused presentation.
100mm Flax Sandwich-Cone Midrange Drivers
Focal’s Flax sandwich cone uses natural flax fibres positioned between thin layers of glass fibre. The construction balances low mass, rigidity and damping to support natural midrange reproduction without unnecessary colouration.
Vocals, guitars, piano and percussion gain improved texture and definition, while complex recordings remain easier to follow.
The 100mm measurement refers to the midrange driver. The separate high-frequency driver is an aluminium inverted-dome tweeter.
Aluminium Inverted-Dome Tweeters
The separate aluminium inverted-dome tweeters provide controlled high-frequency response and broad dispersion. Their low-directivity design supports stable soundstage width across the front seating area.
Cymbals, strings, vocal harmonics and subtle recording details become easier to distinguish. Correct tweeter location, orientation and polarity remain important to achieving the intended result.
Focused Midrange Rather Than Deep-Bass Reproduction
The IS MBZ 100 has a published frequency response of 150Hz-20kHz. It is designed primarily to improve vocals, instruments, treble detail and overall soundstage definition.
The kit is not designed to reproduce deep bass. Compatible Mercedes-Benz subwoofers or factory bass drivers remain responsible for lower-frequency reproduction.

4-Ohm Design for Compatible Factory Systems
The IS MBZ 100 has a nominal impedance of 4 ohms and can operate in selected Standard, Advanced and Burmester systems where Focal specifically lists the application.
Electrical compatibility must be confirmed separately from physical fitment. Factory equalisation, active filtering and channel processing may remain after the speakers are replaced.
Factory Speaker Replacement and Amplifier Upgrades Require Separate Checks
Compatibility as a replacement speaker does not automatically mean that a Focal Impulse amplifier and Y-ISO harness can be added to the same vehicle.

Locations that do not provide a separate tweeter may require an IC MBZ coaxial speaker instead. Dedicated surround and centre-channel positions require the ICR MBZ 100 or ICC MBZ 100 where listed.
